Amazon is developing a new AI chatbot, Metis, to rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Metis will provide real-time information using retrieval-augmented generation. It runs on Amazon’s AI model, Olympus, offering more up-to-date responses than other chatbots. Amazon plans to launch Metis in September at a major Alexa event, led by the AGI team.

CEO Andy Jassy stated Amazon’s AI efforts are on track to generate over $1 billion in annual revenue. Amazon aims to drive “tens of billions of dollars” with AI in the coming years. Despite criticism of earlier AI chatbot Q, Amazon’s generative AI business has reached a multibillion-dollar revenue run rate.

Earlier this year, Amazon introduced AI-powered features to Fire TV devices, emphasizing its commitment to integrating AI. The company confirmed Alexa-powered AI implementation within Fire TV search, competing with Roku and Apple TV. Amazon’s push into generative AI follows strategic moves to improve AI capabilities and meet customer demand for transformative technology.
