The Center for Investigative Reporting (CIR) filed a lawsuit against Microsoft and OpenAI for using their copyrighted content without permission to train AI models. This follows similar legal actions by The New York Times and other media organizations.
CIR accuses OpenAI and Microsoft of scraping their journalistic content to enhance AI products like ChatGPT without compensation. CEO Monika Bauerlein stated that this unauthorized use violates copyright laws.
The lawsuit claims that this infringement damages CIR’s relationships with readers and partners, impacting revenue. Other media entities, including The New York Times and publications owned by Alden Global Capital, are also suing over copyright concerns.
Some media organizations have chosen to sign licensing deals with OpenAI instead of pursuing legal action. This includes The Associated Press, Financial Times, and The Atlantic, among others.
OpenAI responded to the lawsuit by emphasizing their collaboration with the news industry. They aim to display news content in products like ChatGPT while providing proper attribution to drive traffic back to the original articles.
