Over the past decade, Nvidia has dominated the semiconductor sector while Intel has lagged behind. Intel lost chip manufacturing leadership to Taiwan Semiconductor in the 2010s, seeing share losses to Nvidia and others in recent years. However, with CEO Pat Gelsinger leading a turnaround effort, Intel aims to reemerge as an industry leader by 2025.
Intel’s comeback hinges on regaining technology leadership by leaping ahead of TSMC in manufacturing technology. Gelsinger’s ambitious plan involves significant investments and partnerships, with the aim of producing semiconductors with transistors just 1.8nm apart by 2025. Intel’s purchase of high-NA EUV machines from ASML could further boost its edge over TSMC in chipmaking technology.
While Intel focuses on advancing in manufacturing, the company is also preparing to compete with Nvidia in AI GPU accelerators. With the upcoming Gaudi 3 accelerator offering promising performance metrics compared to Nvidia’s offerings, Intel plans to release the Falcon Shores chip in 2026. This chip, combined with Intel’s Xe GPU cores, may provide stiff competition to Nvidia’s products.
Intel’s third pillar of its turnaround strategy is the OneAPI software platform, aiming to break Nvidia’s software moat with a more open programming platform. Partnering with other tech giants to expand OneAPI could provide customers with options beyond Nvidia’s CUDA. If successful, Intel’s efforts in process leadership, AI accelerators, and AI software could position the company well for a successful comeback.
