Elon Musk dropped his lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing the AI firm of betraying its original mission. Musk argued that OpenAI, a non-profit entity he helped set up, had become a for-profit subsidiary of Microsoft, deviating from its goal of creating beneficial AI. Musk left OpenAI in 2018 and launched his own AI firm xAI.

In his lawsuit, Musk claimed that OpenAI’s transformation into a closed-source Microsoft subsidiary contradicts its commitment to ensuring AI benefits all of humanity. OpenAI, backed by Microsoft since 2019, released the ChatGPT chatbot and various image and video generating tools. Microsoft intervened in OpenAI’s internal conflicts, reinstating CEO Sam Altman after his ousting. Musk criticized OpenAI’s Apple partnership, accusing them of mishandling user data.

After leaving OpenAI, Musk founded his own AI company xAI and sought $1 billion in funding. He expressed frustration with OpenAI’s direction, particularly regarding its ties to Apple. Musk’s early involvement in OpenAI and subsequent lawsuit reflect his continued interest and investment in the AI sector.
