General Motors is looking to Costco Wholesale to help drive U.S. consumers to its new all-electric vehicles, such as the Chevrolet Equinox and Blazer EVs. With over 50 million members in the U.S., Costco provides a strong demographic for EV sales representatives to target.
Costco Auto, a third-party service of the retailer, acts as a facilitator between franchised dealers and automakers, offering Costco members exclusive pricing and incentives on vehicles like GM’s EVs. The partnership has facilitated over 500,000 vehicle sales annually, making up at least 3% of all vehicles sold in the U.S.
Costco Auto has seen an increase in interest for electric vehicles, with 7% of member requests related to EVs in 2023. GM is offering Costco members a $1,000 incentive on EVs like the Equinox and Blazer until July, aiming to make the often pricey EVs more appealing to consumers.
Leveraging Costco’s reputation for quality and value, GM aims to target affluent suburban and urban households between the ages of 42 and 59, who make up a significant portion of Costco’s membership. Additionally, Costco shoppers are known for their loyalty to the retailer, providing automakers with a strong customer base to tap into for EV sales.
