General Motors’ Cruise autonomous vehicle unit named former Amazon and Microsoft executive Marc Whitten as its new CEO. Whitten has a track record in technology leadership, including roles with Microsoft, Amazon, and Unity’s Create. Cruise had ceased operations after an accident in which a pedestrian was injured, leading to key leader departures.

A third-party investigation found culture issues, ineptitude, and poor leadership at Cruise contributed to regulatory oversights leading to the accident. However, no evidence of a cover-up was found. Cruise, majority-owned by GM, has investors like Honda Motor, Microsoft, T. Rowe Price, and Walmart, and is resuming operations in various cities.

Whitten’s appointment comes with other executive changes at Cruise, including Nick Mulholland becoming chief marketing officer and Craig Glidden joining as president and chief administrative officer. Glidden’s departure from GM led to Grant Dixton taking over as legal and chief policy officer. Cruise plays a key role in GM’s plan to double revenue to $280 billion by 2030.
