Some of the world’s largest companies and regions are urging governments to increase climate ambition before a February 2025 UN deadline. The coalition, Mission 2025, includes backers like Unilever and IKEA. Frustration with governments reluctant to regulate for change has spurred this effort spearheaded by Christiana Figueres of Global Optimism.
Nearly $31 trillion in annual revenues from major companies are now aligned with net-zero emissions goals, according to the Mission 2025 coalition. A U.N. survey across 77 countries found 80% of respondents want stronger government action on climate change. Figueres criticized a lack of leadership in driving cleaner technologies over incumbent rivals.
Mission 2025 aims to provide data for policy changes to help governments justify stronger climate action. The focus will be on the 20 largest economies responsible for most emissions, as they have the capacity and means to make significant shifts. UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell stressed the need for NDCs to cover all sectors and greenhouse gases.
