Netflix is looking to partner with broadcasters to produce NFL games airing on Christmas Day this year. Two games will be shown in 2024, followed by more in 2025 and 2026. This is Netflix’s first venture into traditional live sports.
Representatives from Netflix have reached out to various broadcasters, including Disney’s ESPN, Comcast’s NBCUniversal, and Paramount Global’s CBS Sports, to produce NFL games on Christmas Day. Discussions have started, but in-depth conversations are yet to begin.
Netflix’s deal for NFL games may face some resistance from current partners like Fox and CBS Sports, who already produce games weekly. Amazon has also faced pushback from some NFL partners when producing games for “Thursday Night Football.”
Netflix aims to reach a younger, global audience by streaming NFL games. The potential to become a future bidder for a larger package of games exists. Current media partners may decide to produce games for Netflix due to league pressure and financial incentives.
Amazon was the first streamer to secure exclusive rights to NFL games with “Thursday Night Football.” The 11-year, $100 billion deal is entering its seventh year, where the NFL could look for new partners. Streaming services like YouTube TV are also gaining rights to stream NFL games.
