New York state lawmakers passed legislation to prevent social media platforms from exposing addictive algorithmic content to users under 18 without parental consent. Governor Kathy Hochul is expected to sign the bills into law, affecting companies like Meta Platforms. Studies have linked excessive social media use by adolescents to mental health issues. The bills aim to create a safer digital environment for young people.

Under the SAFE for Kids Act, social media users under 18 will need parental consent to view addictive feeds. The legislation also restricts online sites from collecting and selling personal data of underage users. Companies like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, and YouTube may be subject to these measures. Violators could face penalties of up to $5,000 per violation. Utah was the first state to regulate children’s access to social media in March 2023.
