Novo Nordisk is investing $4.1 billion to build a new manufacturing plant in North Carolina to boost supply of its weight loss drug Wegovy and diabetes treatment Ozempic. The company plans to invest $6.8 billion in production this year, with the new facility set to be operational by 2029 and staffed by 1,000 workers. Demand for Wegovy has led to intermittent shortages in the U.S., prompting the investment.
Eli Lilly is also investing billions in manufacturing capacity for its GLP-1 drugs for weight loss and diabetes in North Carolina. Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly are both responding to the high demand for weight loss and diabetes treatments as more patients start on Wegovy each week.
