Top U.S. oil and corn industry lobby groups are suing the Biden administration over regulations to cut emissions from heavy-duty vehicles, citing potential economic harm. The EPA’s plan aims to reduce 1 billion tons of greenhouse gas emissions from heavy-duty vehicles released from 2027 to 2032, with heavy-duty vehicles contributing to 7% of national emissions.
The American Petroleum Institute (API), representing top U.S. oil and gas interests, claims the EPA is pushing for technology that isn’t currently available for heavy-duty vehicles, potentially impacting average Americans. The National Corn Growers Association, American Farm Bureau Federation, and Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association have joined the lawsuit, advocating for alternative climate change solutions like biofuels.
The EPA has not responded to the lawsuit, as the API had already filed a separate lawsuit earlier this month opposing emission reductions from cars and light trucks. The administration projects electric vehicles to make up to 56% of car sales between 2030 and 2032, sparking industry opposition and legal challenges.
