OpenAI acquired Rockset, a real-time analytics database founded in 2016. Rockset raised $117 million in funding, with Sequoia and Greylock as investors. Rockset announced serverless vector search in April 2023, leveraging OpenAI embeddings. Acquired by OpenAI, Rockset will shut down access, transition customers, and integrate its team with OpenAI.

Serverless RAG emerged to address scaling challenges in enterprise generative AI. Pinecone launched a serverless RAG product in January 2024 claiming 50x cost savings. Turbopuffer offers serverless RAG indexing. The Rockset acquisition signals a new phase in data ops and data access for improving user output with AI foundation models connected to enterprise data.

Cohere, once an OpenAI alternative, shifted focus to data retrieval in mid-2023. It promotes integrating large language models with RAG for enterprise knowledge retrieval. OpenAI’s acquisition of Rockset brings new expertise and tooling to enhance capabilities directly and at a lower cost. Rockset’s acquisition marks the next wave of RAG innovation and adoption in the enterprise AI market.
