OpenAI is ramping up its lobbying efforts with plans to grow its global affairs team to 50 members by the end of the year, up from three at the start of 2023. The company is expanding its presence in countries with advanced AI legislation but lags behind competitors in government engagement spending.
The move comes as OpenAI and other AI firms are facing possible antitrust investigations from U.S. regulators like the Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission. Antitrust lawyer Omar Ochoa likens the situation to past investigations into Big Tech companies like Amazon, Apple, Google, and Meta, suggesting that legal action may be imminent.
