OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever launches Safe Superintelligence (SSI) Inc, focusing on building safe superintelligence after quitting OpenAI due to a coup attempt against CEO Sam Altman. SSI is a straight-shot lab with a goal of safe superintelligence, founded in the US with Daniel Levy and Daniel Gross. Investors undisclosed.
SSI aims to develop safe superintelligence without revenue pressure, seeking top talent. OpenAI, initially focused on beneficial AI, transitioned to a growing business under Altman. SSI prioritizes safety and progress, insulating from commercial pressures. Sutskever is known for AI research in generative AI at OpenAI.
The announcement of Sutskever’s breakaway comes after conflicts at OpenAI, including Altman’s removal as CEO. Sutskever departed in May following a failed coup attempt. Former OpenAI safety head Dario Amodei also founded a safe AI start-up, Anthropic, raising billions. Jan Leike, who worked with Sutskever, joined Anthropic over safety concerns at OpenAI.
