Mira Murati of OpenAI discussed the evolution of AI from GPT-3 to GPT-4 to GPT-5. GPT-5, slated for release in late 2025 or early 2026, aims for a Ph.D.-level intelligence suited for specialized tasks, with significant progress from toddler-level to high school-level proficiency seen in previous models.

Speculation about GPT-5 initially predicted a late 2023 launch, later revised to a summer release, which resulted in the arrival of GPT-4o. Murati described GPT-4o as a notable but not revolutionary advancement compared to its predecessors.

Microsoft CTO Kevin Scott echoed sentiments that GPT-5 will exhibit enhanced memory and reasoning capabilities, potentially performing well on Ph.D. exams.

Murati highlighted the importance of acknowledging that Ph.D.-level AI intelligence is task-specific, noting that while current AI systems excel at human-level performance in certain areas, they may struggle in others.
