OpenAI delays release of voice chatbot, facing legal issues with copyrighted songs

OpenAI has delayed the release of its advanced voice feature for ChatGPT, citing the need to ensure security and filter out inappropriate content. The new functionality was set to roll out by the end of June but is now expected in the fall of 2024 pending security requirements.

The delay comes amidst lawsuits filed by major music companies against AI start-ups Suno and Udio for allegedly using copyrighted songs from artists like Mariah Carey and Michael Jackson. The music labels are demanding damages of up to $150,000 per copied song, with Suno accused of copying 662 songs and Udio 1,670.

Controversy arose earlier when actress Scarlett Johansson pointed out similarities between her voice and a ChatGPT model named ‘Sky’. OpenAI initially denied involvement but later removed Sky from the program due to legal objections. Johansson called for transparency in the development of AI voices and honesty in voice model training data.
