OpenAI founder Sutskever sets up new AI company devoted to “safe superintelligence”
From ABC News: 2024-06-20 06:48:47
Ilya Sutskever, a co-founder of OpenAI, is starting a safety-focused artificial intelligence company after leaving the organization last month. Safe Superintelligence Inc. aims to develop “superintelligence” AI systems that are smarter than humans while prioritizing safety over short-term commercial pressures. The company is based in Palo Alto and Tel Aviv, focusing on recruiting top technical talent.
Sutskever, along with co-founders Daniel Gross and Daniel Levy, emphasized the company’s exclusive focus on safety and security, not distracted by management or product cycles. His departure from OpenAI followed a failed attempt to push out CEO Sam Altman, leading to internal conflicts over prioritizing business opportunities over AI safety. Sutskever’s previous work at OpenAI involved developing artificial general intelligence.
After leaving OpenAI, Sutskever stated that he had plans for a “very personally meaningful” project, without giving further details. The departure of Sutskever and his team co-leader Jan Leike sparked criticism from within the organization about safety taking a backseat to product development. OpenAI later announced the formation of a safety and security committee, largely composed of company insiders.
