Current and former employees from OpenAI and Google DeepMind are demanding protection from retaliation for raising concerns about the risks posed by the technologies these companies are developing. Recent controversies around OpenAI’s safety approach and staff departures have led to employees signing non-disparagement agreements linked to equity deals. The employees are requesting AI companies to prohibit non-disparagement agreements for risk-related concerns and create an anonymous process for staff to share issues with boards and regulators. Former OpenAI employee Daniel Kokotajlo expressed concerns about the implications of artificial general intelligence (AGI) and believes there is a 50% chance of reaching AGI by 2027. He quit due to concerns about society’s readiness for AGI and the lack of transparency in AI development.
