Mother Jones Publisher CIR sues OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright violations

The Center for Investigative Reporting has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft, accusing them of copyright violations for using CIR’s stories without permission or compensation. The lawsuit alleges violations of the Copyright Act and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, claiming that AI products become more valuable with access to more content.

This legal action follows similar lawsuits by The New York Times and newspapers owned by Alden Global Capital’s MediaNews Group against OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement related to AI development. CIR’s CEO stated that allowing tech companies to use nonprofit publishers’ work for free threatens public access to truthful information in the news landscape.

OpenAI and Time recently announced a content partnership, granting OpenAI access to Time’s past and current content and allowing the tech firm to reference the publication on ChatGPT. This collaboration comes as CIR’s lawsuit emphasizes the importance of protecting publishers’ content from being exploited by large corporations for AI development.
