OpenAI is in talks with Helion to potentially access nuclear fusion-driven electricity generators, providing “vast quantities” of power for datacenters. OpenAI CEO Altman, also chairman of Helion’s board with a $375 million stake, has recused himself from the negotiations.
OpenAI trains AI models on Microsoft Azure servers, with a rumored $100 billion AI supercomputer project, Stargate, requiring five gigawatts of power by 2028. Helion, Microsoft’s first customer for fusion power in 2028, could sell more power to OpenAI for potential supercomputer projects.
