Tribeca Festival and OpenAI announced a program to debut five original short films, the first using OpenAI’s text-to-video AI model Sora. The AI can create video clips up to one minute in length and is gradually being opened up to more filmmakers. The films will debut on June 15 at the Tribeca Film Center Screening Room.
Award-winning Tribeca alumni filmmakers were given a few weeks to create AI films with Sora’s capabilities. Co-founder Jane Rosenthal highlighted how storytelling is vital for humans to make sense of the world. A post-screening conversation with the filmmakers will dive into the importance of pushing boundaries and bringing stories to life in innovative ways.
Filmmaker bios feature Bonnie Discepolo, known for genre films on women’s autonomy, Ellie Foumbi, who won awards for “Our Father, the Devil,” Nikyatu Jusu, recognized for her Sundance-winning horror film “Nanny,” Reza Sixo Safai, a pioneer in blending Eastern and Western narratives, and Michaela Ternasky-Holland, an Emmy-winning director specializing in socially impactful stories using technology.
