The Canadian market closed weak on Friday due to losses in consumer staples and communications sectors. The S&P/TSX Composite Index dropped 0.27% to end at 21,639.10 after tumbling over 200 points earlier in the day. Alimentation Couche-Tard, BCE Inc, Methanex Corporation, and Bombardier Inc all ended with losses, while CCL Industries, Shopify Inc, Cargojet, and goeasy saw gains. Economic data from Statistics Canada showed manufacturing sales rose 1.2% in April, while wholesale sales increased 2.4%, rebounding from previous declines.
