U.S. consumer prices saw a slight increase in May, rising by 3.3% on an annualized basis. Economists had expected the figure to match April’s rate of 3.4%. The core number, excluding volatile items, climbed by 3.4%, lower than projections of 3.5%. The data, released before the Fed’s policy meeting, may impact interest rate decisions. Fed officials are expected to keep rates steady at 5.25% to 5.5%. However, recent trends in inflation could lead to more than one rate cut by the end of 2024. Treasury yields fell and stock futures rose on expectations of further interest rate cuts.
