The Federal Trade Commission and Justice Department are opening antitrust investigations into Microsoft, OpenAI, and Nvidia due to their influence on the artificial intelligence industry. The FTC will focus on Microsoft and OpenAI, while the DOJ will examine Nvidia. The investigation will look at the companies’ conduct. The industry is predicted to reach $1 trillion in revenue by 2032 as tech giants invest heavily in generative AI models. Microsoft has invested $13 billion in OpenAI and utilizes its technology for products like Copilot chatbot. Nvidia chips are crucial for building expensive AI models, with Meta also heavily investing in the company. An open letter from current and former OpenAI employees raises concerns about lack of oversight in the AI industry and the absence of whistleblower protections. The FTC previously announced an inquiry into AI industry heavyweights, including Amazon, Alphabet, Microsoft, Anthropic, and OpenAI. The agency aims to conduct a market inquiry into investments and partnerships in the industry using its authority to make civil investigative demands. AI companies are under scrutiny for using their power to stifle competition or deceive the public. OpenAI, Microsoft, and Nvidia have declined to comment on the investigations.
