Walmart rolls out new job training program, bonuses for associates

Walmart is launching new training programs for high-demand roles such as HVAC technicians and software engineers, along with offering hourly store workers bonuses up to $1,000 per year. The company is investing in stores and workforce to stay ahead of Amazon and retain market share amid high inflation.
Store managers at Walmart can earn over $400,000 a year with bonuses and $20,000 stock grants. Walmart is also upgrading 1,400 stores with a $9 billion investment. The average hourly wage is almost $18, up 30% in five years, with starting pay between $14 and $19 depending on location.
Despite Walmart’s total revenue of around $648 billion last year, some critics argue that wages are still too low. Median annual compensation falls below the poverty line for a family of four. Other companies like Target and Amazon have higher median compensation, but Walmart’s new training programs aim to help employees move into higher-paying roles.
Walmart’s new training programs are designed for skilled trades like technician roles, with pay ranging from $19 to $45 per hour. A pilot program in the Dallas-Fort Worth area is training 100 store and warehouse associates for these higher-paying jobs. Walmart is also increasing the number of skills certificates offered to employees, helping them move into salaried or leadership positions.
