Airports and airlines globally faced a massive IT outage causing delays and cancellations. Out of 110,000 scheduled flights on Friday, 2,691 have been canceled, with more expected. The U.S. government aims for normalcy by Saturday. The aviation sector is hit hard due to its timing sensitivity, relying heavily on coordination.
Microsoft reported users unable to access Office 365 apps due to a configuration change in Azure-backed workloads. Hong Kong and Singapore airports switched to manual check-ins. Cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike addressed a defect impacting Microsoft Windows hosts. Major airlines globally experienced delays and disruption, creating chaos for passengers during a busy travel season.
Flights at major U.S. carriers resumed operations. Some Delta flights are delayed or canceled. The FAA reported operations still impacted in Atlanta, Detroit, Minneapolis, and Salt Lake City. Over 27,000 U.S. flights were scheduled to carry millions of passengers on Friday. Transportation system issues are slowly resolving, aiming for normalcy by Saturday.
European airlines, like Iberia, stayed afloat despite the outage. However, Amsterdam’s Schiphol, Berlin, London Gatwick, and Edinburgh airports experienced disruptions. Schiphol was globally noted for the worst disruptions. Compensation questions arise in Europe due to flight delays of more than three hours, with uncertainty on airline legal responsibility in the U.S. for lengthy delays.
