The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is probing Amazon’s deal to hire top executives and researchers from AI startup Adept, as they aim to catch up with Google and Microsoft in developing large language models. Amazon also invested $4 billion in AI startup Anthropic. The FTC is investigating similar moves by Microsoft, showing concern over AI partnerships and Big Tech influence.

In a similar move, Microsoft hired leadership from Inflection AI and paid a $650 million licensing fee, prompting FTC scrutiny. Amazon’s investment in Anthropic and growing partnerships with AI startups like Adept attract antitrust concerns over Big Tech’s influence in the AI market. The FTC and Justice Department are monitoring potential probes into Microsoft and other industry players like OpenAI and Nvidia.
