Apple hits 52-week high at $220.27, driven by AI focus and strong financial position

Apple shares hit a 52-week high of $220.38 on Jul 2 and finally closed at $220.27, up 14.4% year to date following the annual developers’ event, WWDC, outperforming industry peers. The introduction of Apple Intelligence at WWDC has enhanced AI capabilities, improving Apple’s competitive position in the market.

Apple CEO Tim Cook expressed enthusiasm over Generative AI models, highlighting Apple’s advantage in the AI space. Apple Intelligence aims to enhance user experience across devices by combining language and image understanding with personal context, powered by Apple silicon.

Siri, powered by Apple Intelligence, has become more natural and capable, maintaining context across multiple requests. Apple is integrating ChatGPT into its platforms, enhancing user experience with advanced language models and image generation, available in systemwide Writing Tools.

Apple’s strong liquidity position supports shareholder-friendly initiatives. As of Mar 30, cash & marketable securities were $162.34 billion. Apple returned nearly $27 billion in the second quarter of fiscal 2024 through dividend payouts and share repurchases, raising dividend payout by 4% to 25 cents per share.

China’s growth and competitive pressure are challenges for Apple. China’s directive on non-Chinese phones and stiff competition from local smartphone makers like Huawei have impacted iPhone demand. Despite cutting retail prices to increase iPhone sales in April, Apple’s lack of GenAI capabilities in the iPhone remains a concern.

Apple expects low-single-digit year-over-year revenue growth in the third quarter of fiscal 2024 with a consensus estimate of $83.75 billion in revenues and $1.33 earnings per share. While trading at a premium, Apple’s AI push and expanding Services business make it an attractive long-term investment, with shares trading above the 50-day moving average.
