Microsoft and Apple have stepped down from their board roles at OpenAI due to increasing regulatory pressure on Big Tech firms in AI. Apple reversed its decision to join the board as an observer just a week after agreeing to it. OpenAI will no longer have board observers after Microsoft’s recent departure, despite their investments in the company.

Both Apple and Microsoft have integrated OpenAI’s services into their platforms, with Microsoft investing $13 billion in the company. However, regulators in the US and EU have raised concerns about Microsoft’s influence over OpenAI. Microsoft stated that their observer role was no longer necessary after seeing progress from the new board.

Microsoft had taken on the non-voting observer role on OpenAI’s board last year following the firing of CEO Sam Altman, who was later reinstated. Antitrust bodies are also investigating Microsoft’s deal with AI startup Inflection AI. Amazon is facing scrutiny in the UK over its $4 billion investment in AI firm Anthropic, while Nvidia is under investigation in the US for its dominance in AI chip manufacturing.
