Apple's Phil Schiller becomes observer on OpenAI board, signaling deeper partnership

From Outlook India: 2024-07-03 00:23:39

Apple Inc. will have Phil Schiller, former marketing chief and current head of the App Store, as an observer on OpenAI’s board. This move signals a deeper partnership between the two tech giants. Apple plans to integrate ChatGPT into its devices and will start its observer role later this year.

Schiller’s observer role allows him to attend board meetings and gain insights into decision-making processes but does not grant him voting rights. With both Microsoft and Apple on the board, potential conflicts may arise due to their history as rivals and partners. It’s common for board observers to step out during sensitive discussions.

While not directly involved in Apple’s AI initiatives, Schiller’s extensive experience in managing the company’s brand makes him a suitable choice for the observer position. At 64, he now works as an Apple Fellow, overseeing the App Store and product launch events. The presence of both Apple and Microsoft in OpenAI meetings could impact future AI initiatives and discussions.
