Apple has committed to President Biden’s guidelines for responsible AI development, making it the 16th company to sign on. The guidelines aim to test AI systems for biases, vulnerabilities, and security risks, with results shared transparently. Partners include Google, Microsoft, Adobe, IBM, and Nvidia.
The move by Apple coincides with plans to integrate OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot into the iPhone voice assistant. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has expressed concerns about the security implications of this partnership and vowed to ban Apple devices if OpenAI’s AI is integrated at the OS level.
While the guidelines are voluntary, they showcase the Biden administration’s push for responsible AI development in lieu of legal regulations. Congress has been slow to make progress on AI legislation, prompting industry leaders like Apple to prioritize safety and ethics in their AI efforts.
