Australia mandates internet firms to create code protecting minors from inappropriate online content

Australia is giving internet industry 6 months to create code preventing minors from accessing inappropriate content online or face imposed regulations, says eSafety Commissioner. Code must address high-impact material exposure, including themes of suicide and eating disorders, by setting standards for various online platforms.

eSafety Commissioner demands industry plan by Oct. 3 to protect minors from violent and extreme pornography by implementing age verification, parental controls, and content filtering. Industry codes previously covered terrorism and child sexual exploitation prevention.

Google and Meta, owners of Facebook and Instagram, pledge to work with industry on new code. Representatives of X, formerly Twitter, and Apple were not available for comment. DIGI, an industry body with large internet company members, looks forward to continued engagement with government and Commissioner.
