Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is set to acquire Silo AI for $665 million in cash to enhance its AI capabilities. This move is part of AMD’s strategy to strengthen its AI ecosystem. The deal is expected to close in the second half of the year. AMD has been investing in several acquisitions to bolster its AI portfolio, spending $125 million in the past year on various companies like Nod.ai and Mipsology.
Silo AI, based in Helsinki, Finland, provides AI solutions and has a diverse clientele, including companies like Allianz and Philips. The acquisition of Silo AI aims to bridge the technological gap with NVIDIA in the AI race. AMD is focusing on acquiring top talent in AI development to compete effectively in cloud, embedded, and endpoint computing markets. Despite these efforts, AMD still faces challenges from NVIDIA and issues in its Embedded and Gaming businesses.
The AI space is booming, with increased spending expected in the coming years. Gartner forecasts a CAGR of 19.1% in AI software spending, reaching $297 billion by 2027. AMD is positioning itself to challenge NVIDIA in data centers and consumer PCs with new offerings like the Instinct MI325X accelerator and Ryzen AI mobile processors. However, the macroeconomic environment and competition from tech giants pose challenges for AMD.
AMD anticipates declines in the Embedded and Gaming segments in the second quarter of 2024. Despite this, the company expects overall revenues to grow by approximately 6% year over year. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for revenue and earnings reflects this growth trend. Although AMD’s stock has seen recent gains, fundamental challenges and a stretched valuation suggest caution. With a Zacks Rank #5 (Strong Sell), investors may want to proceed with caution in the short term.
