In early 2023, OpenAI’s AI chatbot ChatGPT experienced a security breach with a hacker gaining access to the company’s internal messaging systems, stealing details of its AI technologies. The hacker obtained information from an online discussion forum but did not access the system housing the AI’s technology.
OpenAI executives disclosed the breach to employees in April 2023 but did not inform the public as no customer or partner information was compromised, believing the hacker to be a private individual with no national security threat. Law enforcement was not involved in the incident.
In May, OpenAI revealed disrupting five covert influence operations using its AI models for deceptive online activities, generating short comments and articles, creating fake social media accounts. The company also prevented Israeli firm STOIC from interfering in India’s Lok Sabha elections within 24 hours, labeled “Zero Zero.”
