Dollar General settles with Labor Department over safety violations, required to pay $12 million

The U.S. Department of Labor reached a settlement with Dollar General, requiring the retailer to pay $12 million in penalties and improve workplace safety in its 19,000 stores. The company previously faced over $21 million in fines for safety violations and became the first severe violator on OSHA’s list in 2023.

To meet the settlement terms, Dollar General must hire safety managers, reduce inventory, provide training, create safety committees, and conduct compliance audits. The retailer also implemented a Safety Operations Center and anonymous hotline for safety concerns. Failure to correct hazards quickly could result in fines up to $500,000.

Dollar General is required to submit quarterly reports on safety improvements to OSHA. The settlement addresses blocked exits, clutter, and other safety issues within the stores. The company opposed hiring third-party auditors in response to shareholder request but is now working to improve safety for employees and customers alike.
