Discount store operator Dollar General has agreed to pay a $12 million penalty for safety violations including blocked exits and fire extinguishers. The settlement requires the company to improve workplace safety across its 19,000 stores in the U.S. after being designated a “severe violator” by the Labor Department.

To address safety concerns, Dollar General will hire more safety managers, expand safety protocols, and provide training for employees and managers. The company must also reduce inventory to prevent blocked exits and unsafe storage. Failure to correct hazards promptly could result in daily fines of up to $500,000.

Assistant Secretary of Labor Douglas Parker emphasized the importance of these changes to ensure thousands of workers have a safe workplace and return home healthy each day. Dollar General did not immediately comment on Thursday, as it works to enhance safety measures and compliance with federal regulations.
