Google updates policy to combat election misinformation by requiring disclosure of digitally altered content

Google has updated its ‘Political Content Policy’ to combat election misinformation. Advertisers must disclose election ads with digitally altered content by selecting a checkbox in their ad campaign settings.

Advertisers must provide their own “prominent disclosure” for all other ad formats, while Google will auto-generate disclosures for ads marked as containing synthetic content.

A fake video of two Bollywood actors criticizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi went viral during India’s 2024 general elections, leading to AI-generated ads urging support for the opposition Congress party. This prompted Google to update its policy on digitally manipulated content in election ads.
