With just two days until the UK general election, Labour continues to lead in the polls, indicating a potential change in government. The next government will face significant challenges such as growing the economy, improving public finances, and strengthening energy security. Labour’s policy proposals focus on boosting economic growth, improving public services, and tackling climate change.
The Labour Party manifesto includes plans to launch a new industrial strategy, create a national wealth fund, and reform the pension fund sector to increase investment in the UK economy. Labour also aims to reduce the public debt ratio and fiscal deficit, partly funded by a temporary oil and gas windfall tax. However, risks to the fiscal outlook remain high, with uncertainties over revenue measures.
Strengthening energy security and meeting climate targets are key priorities for the next government. The UK, being a net importer of natural gas, is vulnerable to energy shocks. The Conservative government updated its energy security strategy in 2023 and the UK has made significant progress in decarbonizing its economy. Addressing energy dependence on imported oil and gas will be crucial for the new government.
