OpenAI accused of preventing employees from reporting AI risks, CEO admits embarrassment

OpenAI whistleblowers filed a complaint with the SEC, alleging the company restricted employees from raising concerns about the risks of its technology. The group sent a letter to SEC Chair Gary Gensler asking for enforcement of rules violated by OpenAI’s employee agreements. The agreements required employees to waive whistleblower compensation rights.

In response to reports of restrictive off-boarding agreements, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman admitted embarrassment over the provisions. The agreements forbade departing employees from criticizing OpenAI for life. Altman acknowledged that some parts of the agreements should not have been included, calling it a regrettable situation.
