OpenAI will block API traffic from unsupported countries, impacting Chinese AI startups using the service for large language models. This move may drive domestic AI companies to prioritize innovation and accelerate R&D. China is close behind the US in LLM development, accounting for 36% of the global market compared to the US’ 44%. China leads in AI patents and industrial robot installations, with 61.1% of global AI patents and 290,300 robots installed in 2022. The gap between the US and China in AI development is minimal, driving Chinese startups to integrate with domestic LLM developers and utilize vast linguistic materials for model training. China’s large, internet-connected population will boost AI sector growth.
