OpenAI whistleblowers question NDAs limiting discussion of AI risks with US SEC

OpenAI whistleblowers have written to the US SEC, citing concerns about contracts restricting employees from speaking out about the risks of AI technology. The whistleblowers are seeking action against nondisclosure agreements that discourage raising concerns with agencies. Senator Chuck Grassley shared the letter, calling for changes to OpenAI’s policies.

In response, OpenAI stated it protects employees’ rights to make disclosures as per the law and has removed terms from contracts that suggest punishment for speaking out. The company recently formed a Safety and Security Committee to oversee the training of its next AI model. Apple and Microsoft have both stepped down from their board observer roles at OpenAI due to improved governance.

Microsoft mentioned that the board observer seat was no longer necessary after OpenAI’s governance had improved significantly. Apple, which had been expected to take on the observer role, declined to do so. OpenAI plans to establish a new engagement approach by hosting regular stakeholder meetings with strategic partners and investors. The US SEC has not responded to queries regarding the whistleblowers’ concerns.
