1. OpenAI faced a security breach in early 2023 when hackers gained access to internal messaging systems, stealing AI design information. Despite knowledge of the incident, OpenAI kept it secret due to no customer or partner data being compromised, not reporting to authorities.

2. Concerns arose about OpenAI’s security vulnerability to foreign adversaries like China, given the US-China AI arms race. Former board member Leopold Aschenbrenner criticized the company’s insufficient security measures, leading to his termination after raising concerns.

3. OpenAI denied firing Aschenbrenner over security issues but saw additional departures, including cofounder Ilya Sutskever, over safety disagreements. A new safety and security committee was established last month, appointing former NSA director Paul Nakasone to lead, signaling a heightened focus on security.

4. While Nakasone’s appointment shows a commitment to enhancing security, Edward Snowden criticized the move, calling it a betrayal to global rights. Nakasone, a former head of the US Cyber Command, will now play a key role in addressing OpenAI’s security challenges.
