Senator Cantwell asks Boeing CEO to testify, plans new FAA legislation for increased oversight

Senate Commerce Committee chair Maria Cantwell has asked Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun to testify before her committee to increase FAA oversight of planemakers. The FAA and Boeing have not commented. Cantwell plans to introduce new legislation requiring the FAA to utilize safety management systems (SMS) following recent oversight concerns. FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker previously admitted to inadequate oversight in Boeing incidents. The FAA is finalizing rules for SMS implementation for charter, commuter, and air tour operators. Boeing already has a voluntary SMS program in place.
