TSX closes higher as energy, consumer staples, and technology sectors see gains

The Canadian market started weak but ended the session on a firm note, buoyed by gains in energy, consumer staples, and technology sectors. The S&P/TSX Composite Index closed up 0.36% at 21,953.80 after touching a low of 21,802.33. Energy stocks like International Petroleum Corp surged over 6.5%, while consumer staples like Saputo Inc climbed nearly 3%. In the technology sector, companies such as Converge Technology Solutions, Descartes Systems Group, and Dye & Durham saw gains of 2 to 3%. Aecon Group Inc tanked 17.6% following a stock downgrade by BMO Capital Markets. The S&P Global Canada Manufacturing PMI remained unchanged at 49.3 in June 2024, indicating continued contraction in factory activity.
