Boeing, Spirit AeroSystems in spotlight at NTSB hearing on 737 Max panel blowout

From CNBC: 2024-08-06 17:20:30

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating a door plug blowout on a Boeing 737-9 MAX during an Alaska Airlines flight in January 2024. Boeing is making design changes to prevent future incidents. Thousands of documents were released ahead of a hearing, revealing manufacturing flaws and safety concerns.

NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy emphasized that the investigation is not a PR campaign for Boeing. Preliminary findings show that bolts meant to hold the door in place were missing. Boeing executives are working on new design changes to address safety issues related to the door plug incident.

The blowout has forced Boeing into crisis mode, leading to a management shakeup and delayed plane deliveries. Outgoing CEO Dave Calhoun is working to eliminate defective components through a process called traveled work. Boeing is also looking to buy back Spirit AeroSystems to improve quality control.
