– Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian offered employees two free travel passes as a thank you for enduring massive disruptions caused by an IT outage and software update issue that cost the company about $500 million, equal to 40% of its second-quarter profit.
– The disruptions forced the carrier to cancel more than 5,000 flights between July 19 and July 24, affecting more than 40,000 servers that had to be manually reset.
– Delta flight attendants picked up over 6,100 extra trips and received additional pay, with the carrier offering confirmed seats instead of standby passes to affected employees.
– Despite the stabilization of operations, Delta is facing an investigation by the U.S. Department of Transportation over the disruptions, with plans to pursue legal action against CrowdStrike and Microsoft. Similar technology issues have affected other airlines like Southwest in the past.
