Gilead Sciences uncovers a drug-counterfeiting operation involving tampering with HIV medications before reaching patients. The mastermind, Peter Khaim, distributed counterfeit medications through two NYC pharmacies. Gilead sued Khaim, alleging he manufactured and sold fake Gilead products, jeopardizing patient safety. Seizures conducted at the pharmacies and Khaim’s home resulted in confiscating over $750,000 of suspected counterfeit meds. Khaim received a 96-month sentence for medical fraud and a 15-year sentence for insurance fraud. Gilead continues to work with authorities to dismantle counterfeiting networks and protect patients from fraudulent medications. In a prior case, Khaim made over $38 million selling fake Gilead meds. Despite an injunction, Khaim persisted in his counterfeiting operation, found to be operating from the pharmacies in Queens. Lighter fluid was discovered at the pharmacies during the seizures, indicating potential tampering and resealing of medication bottles. Gilead remains vigilant against counterfeit drugs, addressing patient safety concerns and partnering with law enforcement to combat pharmaceutical fraud.
