Harley-Davidson drops diversity efforts after online pressure
From CNBC: 2024-08-20 12:52:10
Harley-Davidson is scaling back its diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, citing a focus on retaining their core riding community. The company has ceased consulting the Human Rights Campaign’s metric for LGBTQ+ employee treatment and rejects hiring quotas and “socially motivated content” in training. Conservative activist Robby Starbuck praised the move.
The decision to cut DEI initiatives has drawn criticism from HRC’s Eric Bloem, who called it “impulsive” and prioritizing politics over the interests of employees and consumers. On the other hand, Starbuck hailed it as “another win for our movement.” Tractor Supply also eliminated DEI roles in June, following a U.S. Supreme Court decision on affirmative action.
Harley-Davidson and Tractor Supply’s anti-DEI sentiments follow a broader trend of companies revisiting diversity initiatives post-Supreme Court decision. Starbucks, Disney, and Target have faced legal challenges over their LGBTQ+ inclusion efforts. The moves by Harley-Davidson and others could have implications for corporate hiring and recruiting strategies moving forward.
