South Korean officials met to discuss EV safety and potential battery brand disclosure following an EV blaze damaging an apartment block. Talks will be held with automakers such as Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen. Concerns about EV fires were raised after images of charred cars circulated in the media.
Kia Corp’s EV6 with SK On batteries also caught fire in a parking lot recently, highlighting the fire risks associated with EVs. Seoul Metropolitan Fire & Disaster Headquarters reported that underground parking lot fires are common, with electrical sources accounting for 53% of car fires. South Korea plans to require EV makers to disclose battery brands.
Hyundai Motor Co recently identified battery manufacturers for their EV models, including LG Energy Solution, SK On, and CATL. Automotive experts emphasize the importance of certifying fire hazards for each battery brand, rather than just requiring disclosure.
