Dividend investing involves more than just looking at yield. Morningstar uses specialized indices to select the best European dividend companies. In July, the Europe High Dividend Equity index rose 3.0%, outperforming the broader European market. Financial sector stocks like Natwest Group and Barclays saw gains. Pharma companies like Novartis and Sanofi also raised dividends in August.

Novartis increased its dividend by 3.1% to CHF 3.30, continuing a tradition of annual increases since 1996. Sanofi raised its dividend by 5.6% to EUR 3.76, with the highest yield of the healthcare companies listed. Roche paid an annual dividend of CHF 9.60, boasting strong growth and valuation. GSK pays quarterly dividends, with an upcoming dividend of £0.15 on October 10.

Several companies recently paid dividends or have upcoming ex-dividend dates. British American Tobacco, Koninklijke KPN, and Reckitt Benckiser are among those with recent or upcoming dividend payments. Ex-dividend dates for ING Groep, Unilever, Barclays, and NatWest are approaching. Rio Tinto, GSK, and HSBC also have upcoming ex-dividend dates.

Morningstar selected the best European dividend stocks from indices like Developed Markets Large Cap Dividend Leaders. 51 companies were chosen based on criteria like yield, growth, and low volatility. The list includes companies like Novartis, Sanofi, and Roche, which have strong dividend growth track records and attractive valuations.
